The Welsh National Opera sets out on tour once more, bringing an array of productions to audiences across the country. From classics like Cosi Fan Tutte and The Magic Flute to new commissions like Blaze of Glory! there is plenty to enjoy from the esteemed company as they continue their mission to prove the power of Opera can transform lives.
Directed by Olivia Fuchs, the WNO presents a dazzling new production of Benjamin Britten's Death In Venice; a tale of feverish obsession played out on the stifling, contagion-ridden streets of the lagoon city.
What is the story?
Set in Venice during the early 20th century, Death In Venice is inspired by Thomas Mann's novella of the same name. Exploring the exploits of a celebrated author, Gustav von Aschenbach, we follow him to Venice, where authorities are desperately trying to hide a significant cholera outbreak. As the contagion grows, so too does Aschenbach's passion for a young tourist, leading to an obsession that turns from desire to horror.
